How do you keep yourself tethered to your priorities?

I had an epiphany over the holidays as I was walking on a nearly deserted beach at the Jersey shore with my unleashed black lab. On one level, it was nirvana as I took in the beauty of the sand, waves, horizon, and seagulls. On another level, I felt distracted by my need to constantly check for other people/dogs ahead of and behind me.

In an effort to quiet my mind, I decided to leash my dog on the way back to our house. It worked. She didn’t argue and I found myself breathing easier and feeling much more present in the present moment.

In fact, as I looked down to peruse the scattered shells and rocks beneath me, I spotted a gorgeous stone. It was smooth, a little sparkly and had a balanced oval shape. As I slid the treasure into my pocket, I pondered how ESSENTIAL it is to keep ourselves tethered to ourselves AND ALSO to what we hold most dear in the world.
